CONFEDERATIONS CUP 2013

This is a dress rehearsal for the Samba Boys at home for World Cup 2014. I guess most of the Brazil fans expect a victory at home, however, I don't think it will be that easy. There is a reason Brazil is now ranked 22 in the world with even Mexico being rated 17 above them (FIFA Rankings).

Things have gone according to plan for the brand names countries i.e. Brazil, Italy, Spain, no surprises here. The teams have brought out the heavy artillery for this tournament, however, the Samba Boys will have to prevent teams getting on top of their 18 yard box so easily if they are to stand a chance in this tournament and have any chance at a World Cup victory next year. You could see a 22nd rated team playing a 32nd rated team in Brazil against Japan; although Japan looked technically proficient. Brazil's 3 nil victory was indeed expected yet impressive.

Spain did their usual stifling possession display against Uruguay winning 2 goals to 1, although Luis 'Biter Man' Suarez peach of a free kick had Casillas looking like a schoolboy goalkeeper; totally beaten. Spain as usual played open and free flowing and did their defensive work by keeping possession of the ball; 71% possession to be exact.

Italy did what was needed for their victory with the maestro Pirlo showing his class taking a beautiful free kick of his own; goalkeeper had no chance. Chicharito converted a penalty for Mexico with a 1-1 half time scoreline. The Insane One Balotelli brushed aside his marker to slot home for Italy's 2-1 victory over Mexico.

Nine goals from 3 matches and nine different scorers, this is the football I love to watch. And the goals are coming from players at various positions. What I love most of all is that players are kicking from distance and scoring, which is something I always advocate, as the goalkeeper is closer to his line and has more area to cover; he doesn't have much chance to cut angles.

I am impressed so far with what I have seen, and can't wait to see what Tahiti and Nigeria have to say for themselves.

VERONICA CAMPBELL BROWN

Veronica Campbell Brown (VCB) has been the darling of Jamaican athletics for quite some time now. That fact does not change overnight in my eyes. Furthermore, we have not heard from the darling herself.

Can we please give the woman a chance to explain herself and not try to explain for her. VCB has given us numerous proud moments as a nation and this positive testing can't possibly wipe away those moments in one go.

VCB you have JAMAICA'S full support and our love comes unconditional for our athletes.

In all of this we often forget the man behind the scenes, so Omar continue standing by your wife; she needs you now more than ever.

Jamaica 0 Honduras 2

We went to the 1998 World Cup with 14 points, however, this time around the fat lady sings.

If I have the energy I may do a review, but it makes no sense, Tappa is not listening.

The Reggae Boyz v Honduras June 11, 2013

We have beaten Honduras away from home once before. Based on how the teams are now positioned in the group, we MUST do it again in order to have at least a play-off chance to reach RIO 2014.

They have scored 14 goals against us when we have played there in 8 matches; we have scored 4 against them when we have played there.

I hear the fat lady rehearsing in the dressing room, and this game obviously will determine how far up the RIO mountain we will go. Jamaica MUST win this game; although we are the only team in this round of matches without a win.

What I have put forward as my team and strategy is solely based on the players now available for selection. There are other players I would have included in the squad.

MY TEAM
Ricketts, Mariappa, Gordon, Powell, Woodbine, McCleary, Austin, Beckford, Robinson, Elliott, Daley

POSSIBLE CHANGES
Teddy Johnson, Jermaine Hue, Ryan Johnson, Lovel Palmer, K Daley

I did not factor Lovel Palmer into the formation because obviously he is not in the team at the moment, why? I don’t know. He is much too multi-faceted to be left out of the squad.
Ricketts
      Gordon                  Mariappa
       Daley               Austin                  Woodbine
     Powell                        Elliott
                                              McCleary (Hue)
Robinson (Teddy) Beckford (R Johnson)

Our major problem is the creation of good scoring opportunities and scoring goals. If you look closely at the formation, there are triangles all over the place. Any pass must be supported by two other passes, even if the players are marked; the pass should be available. This is a branch of the 5-3-2 formation, however, can still be classified as 4-4-2, depending on how you choose to look at it and how the players are used.

I must add that commendation must be given to the coaching staff for squad selection. Although, the squad could be a little deeper, however, so be it.

MY STRATEGY
Give Alvas Powell a free role, his burly presence, speed and stamina must be imposed on the opposing team, he has the goods. Give Alvas, McCleary and Robinson the flank to exploit.

Scenario 1 (Right Side)
If Alvas goes to get a cross over, McCleary drops to support, Daley and Austin step up and Elliott covers. Robinson to cross over to the back post and Beckford comes near post for the cross. An alternative can be an inside pass for Austin to shoot from outside the box.

Scenario 2 (Right Side)
If Robinson goes to get a cross over, Alvas supports, Daley and Austin step up and Elliott covers. McCleary goes back post and Beckford comes near post. I have given the alternative already.

Scenario 3 (Right Side)
If McCleary goes to get a cross over, Alvas supports, Daley and Austin step up and Elliott covers. Robinson goes back post, Beckford comes near post. Alternative already established and not restricted to Austin taking the shot.

The only difference on the left side is that Beckford would not be going out on the flank, McCleary would have to double up there, if winded, Woodbine can come into action with Elliott filling that gap left when Woodbine comes forward. I want Beckford inside to meet the crosses with headers on goal.

The defense is really doing what it is to do and I would not change anything other than to remain alert for the entire game.

If the attack breaks down, or is not on, it is important we maintain possession of the ball; the Reggae Boyz will burn less energy this way.

I would bring on Teddy Johnson in the second half for Robinson or Beckford, although I think Robinson would be more winded because he would be shouldering more responsibility.

I would bring on Hue for McCleary and urge Hue to give 100% while on the pitch, because he is not being asked to play the entire match. The only thing I would need from Hue consistently are those searching passes to hit Beckford or Teddy in the box, they will have to do the rest. I am also sure Alvas Powell will find himself in the mix, and I am quite comfortable with that because he gets back to position quite easily. There are many other variations of attack I can come up with, but those are the ones with a higher probability of scoring, ‘In My View’.

We need to have the Hondurans (Los Catrachos) thinking about what we are going to do. Los Catrachos have qualified for the World Cup as recent as 2010 in the same group as the revered Spain. However, they finished bottom of the table just as in 1982. Of note is that Honduras have defeated the USA, drew with Mexico and lost to Costa Rica and Panama in these round of matches thus far.

I need to have that fat lady gagged, so Jamaica…….YOU KNOW WHAT IS REQUIRED.

JAMAICA 1 - USA 2

In my previous blog http://antoniobell.blogspot.com/2013/06/jamaica-0-mexico-1-result-june-4.html I mentioned under the subtitle MY STRATEGY that Jermaine Beckford should be the target of all set plays. That advice bore fruit in the 89th minute of play to allow Jamaica to equalize with the USA after an Altidore header in the first half. A free kick swung in from our left flank by Richard Austin was flashed in by Beckford.

A simple laps in concentration cost us the match. We have to be cognizant of the fact that the Americans concentrate for 90 minutes plus the time added on. I think this was the match we didn't deserve to lose, a fair result would have been a draw; but the USA was steadfast and disciplined as I have always said and did all they could to win the game.......and they did.

The USA player that impressed the most for me was their #4 Michael Bradley, he was the one who was the force to be reckoned with in midfield for the USA (I guess that's why he now plays for Roma in Italy). Dempsey played his usual classy game.

Before I give my Reggae Boyz players review, I want to mention something about ALVAS POWELL. In my last blog I wrote that he was one for the future, I think that future is now. Portmore United (his club in Jamaica) should be able to get at least GBP5million for this player straight to the Premiership...and I am not joking people. He ran for the entire game up and down his flank defending and attacking, he can do no wrong for me right now (shades of Roberto Carlos) and he is only 18 years old. Raw talent on display and if he continues on this trend he should have a long career in football.

Ricketts - as usual did what was required
Marriappa - as usual did what was required; he should not
have a problem getting a contract back to the
                   Premiership, classy defender
Gordon - proving to be a suitable Nosworthy replacement
Woodbine - missing for most of this game; played much
                    better against Mexico
Powell - see paragraph above; phenomenal talent
J Johnson - took on defenders as he needs to do,
but wasted a lot of energy, if he gets things right
no defender can stop him, not even Vidic
M Eliott - played better today, good holding midfielder, however,
needs to use the ball a little better sometimes,
his passes often put players under pressure
McCleary - took on defenders as he needs to do,
but still going lateral, I need him to attack to goal more
Austin - gave 150% today, I wish everyone had his
             enthusiasm and purpose
J Hue - still walking on the field too much for me, if he is not
getting the ball we are in essence playing with 10 men.
His work rate is too low. We can't afford a one dimensional
midfielder in this setup. Give him one half and ask
            everything of him.
R Johnson - bustling but not giving us what we need right now

SUBSTITUTES
T Robinson - didn't feel his impact when he came on,
                     he can do much better
O Daley - did what he had to do
J Beckford -  the goal scorer, did what was required,
he can be used much more, a potent option,
                     or starter

I seem to keep repeating myself, but it is what it is. I saw a lot of positives today nonetheless:

  • More shots to goal
  • Tried to get down the flanks to whip in crosses
  • Alvas Powell got forward a lot, this is an option for us to look at seriously
  • At times a glimmer of a passing game
  • Our defenders played well
NEGATIVES
  • One too many wayward passes
  • Concentration needed for longer periods
  • Need more initiative in attack; more creativity
  • Instructions from two coaches MAY cause confusion on the pitch
The USA is a very disciplined team, almost robotic, this is something I admire about the team. The USA will stick to the plan and try their best to execute the plan effectively and efficiently. Only a pity the Reggae Boyz had to find this out today. Jurgen Klinsmann must be breathing a sigh of relief if even for a short while.

Quite unfortunate the Reggae Boyz lost today, but such is the game of football; you don't always get what you expect. The precipice is getting steeper by the match; can we now climb this mountain to Rio? Reggae Boyz you are killing me. I just hope when the Reggae Boyz do get things right it's not too late. No white towel for me just yet, 5 more games to go. The USA, Costa Rica and Mexico have struck serious blows to our World Cup chances. I refuse to give up until the fat lady sings nonetheless.

JAMAICA I don't want to hear that fat lady sing.
